If you are Deaf or hard of hearing, you can communicate with others using our Text Relay Service.

You can place calls using your computer, laptop or tablet using a web browser. You can also place relay calls through your mobile phone or tablet through the NZ Relay mobile app.

You can receive text relay calls through the NZ Relay app, but you will need to be registered and logged in to do so.

Please do not use NZ Relay services to make emergency calls.

Make a Call

  1. Open the NZ Relay app on your mobile/tablet and select Text Relay from the drop down menu.
  2. Provide the phone number of the person you want to talk to. Press 'Call' now. You will be connected to a Relay Assistant who will make the call for you.
  3. Type your message. The Relay Assistant will voice your message to your caller and then type their response back to you.

Receive a Call

You must be registered and logged in to receive a Text Relay call.

  1. Open the NZ Relay app on your mobile/tablet. Select 'My Account' and Log in to receive calls. You will need to ensure that notifications are enabled.
  2. When someone calls your NZ Relay phone number, you will receive a notification on your device that they are calling you. Tap the notification. Answer the incoming call. Tap to return to the chat screen.
  3. If you accept the call, you will be connected to a Relay Assistant. Type your message. The Relay Assistant will voice your message to your caller and then type their response back to you.
